Shopify was founded in 2006 by Tobi Lütke after he tried to sell snowboards online. By 2026, Shopify powers millions of stores globally — including most of the modern DTC wave (Allbirds, Gymshark, Glossier). The platform has expanded from a simple store-builder into a full commerce OS with payments, fulfillment, finance, and headless commerce. Shopify's sustained product velocity has kept it ahead of every challenger.
