What is
Tool Use?

An LLM's ability to call external functions (search, calculator, database, etc.) during a response.

Definition

Tool use lets an LLM access information or take actions outside its weights. The model is given a list of available functions, decides when to call them based on the user query, and incorporates the results into its response. Modern frontier models (Claude, GPT-4) are tuned for tool use natively.

Example

A customer support bot that calls a "lookup_order" function when a user asks about their delivery, returning real shipment data.
